Why Famloop never shows an old location as live
Most family locators show you a dot and let you assume it is current. Here is how Famloop calculates location freshness instead of storing it, and what that changes when a phone goes quiet.
Open almost any family locator and you will see a map with a dot on it. What you usually will not see is how old that dot is. The app shows you a position; you supply the assumption that it is current.
That assumption is wrong often enough to matter. A phone loses signal in a car park. Battery optimisation suspends the app. Someone turns off precise location without mentioning it. The dot stays exactly where it was, looking just as confident as it did a minute ago.
Famloop is built around refusing to do that. Here is what that means in practice.
Freshness is calculated, never stored
A member's status in Famloop is not a value written to a database when something happens. It is worked out from the last fix the phone actually reported, every single time it is displayed.
That sounds like an implementation detail. It is the whole feature. A stored status can go stale — the phone stops reporting, nothing updates the record, and the app keeps rendering a cheerful "Live" badge that no longer means anything. A calculated status cannot drift, because there is nothing to drift.
The states you can see are:
- Live — actively sharing, with a fix from moments ago.
- Updated X ago — the exact age, in plain words.
- Offline — no connection, with the time it dropped and the last known place.
- Sharing paused — they chose to stop.
- Permission needed — a device setting is blocking updates.
"Live" needs two things, not one
This is the rule most apps get loose about. In Famloop, Live requires an active sharing session and a very recent fix. Both. Age alone is never enough.
So a phone that reported an hour ago and has been sitting on a kitchen table since cannot show as Live. It will tell you it was updated an hour ago, because that is what happened.
Pausing stops the uploads, not just the pin
When someone pauses sharing in Famloop, location uploads stop. Their Loop sees a "Sharing paused" state rather than a position quietly frozen in place.
The distinction matters in both directions. The person pausing gets what they actually asked for. Everyone else is told that what they are looking at is deliberately not current, instead of being left to misread a stationary dot as a stationary person.
History shows gaps instead of inventing routes
Location history has holes in it. Phones go through tunnels, lose signal, get switched off. The tempting thing is to draw a smooth line between the last known point and the next one, because it looks better.
It is also a guess presented as a record. Famloop marks the gap. If there was no trustworthy location for forty minutes, the history says there was no trustworthy location for forty minutes.
Failures get reported
If a check-in or an SOS does not send, Famloop says so rather than showing a reassuring tick. Your Loop is never told something happened when it did not — which is a strange thing to have to state as a feature, and precisely why it is one.
What this costs
Honesty makes the app look worse sometimes. A competitor's map can show four confident dots while ours shows two Live, one "updated 26 minutes ago" and one "Offline since 2:10 PM".
Ours is the accurate picture. The other one is the same information with the uncertainty painted over. When you are checking whether a teenager got to a friend's house, the difference between "she is there" and "her phone last reported being there 40 minutes ago" is the entire reason you opened the app.
What Famloop deliberately cannot do
Worth saying plainly, because these are the questions we get asked most:
- It cannot locate a phone by number. Everyone installs the app, joins your Loop and grants location permission themselves.
- There is no hidden or silent mode. Every person on the map put themselves there and can pause or leave at any time.
- It does not contact emergency services. SOS alerts the people in your Loop — in a real emergency, call your local emergency number first.
Those are not features waiting on a future release. They are choices.
Try it
Famloop is free for one Loop of up to 3 members, with place alerts, SOS, check-ins and a Safe Arrival Timer, and there are no ads. It is available for iPhone and Android.
